The WIAC championship comes down to eight games this week
as the Pointers host UW-Stout on Monday and UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday before
heading to UW-Whitewater for a four-game series against the first-place
Warhawks over the weekend.
UW-Stevens Point enters the week at 15-5 in the league and
trails UW-Whitewater, which is 15-4 in the WIAC, by one-half game. The
Pointers are also close to clinching a berth in the league tournament on May
10-11.
The Pointers split a doubleheader at UW-Platteville on
Wednesday, winning 4-1 and losing 11-5. Sunday, they swept UW-Stout 9-1 and
5-3.
Senior Bill Verbrick (Appleton, WI) pitched eight innings
and struck out 11 in Sunday�s opener to become the school�s all-time
career strikeout leader and raise his season record to 7-1. He also pitched
one inning in the second game for a save and lowered his season earned run
average to 1.98.
Randy Reed (Appleton, WI) hit a two-run homer in the
seventh inning of the second game to break a 3-3 tie and give the Pointers
the lead. Matt Peetz (Spring Green, WI) was three-for-three and finished
six-for-13 for the week. Ryan Ivy (Kenosha, WI) had hits in both games at
Platteville, but was hitless in Sunday�s opener to end his school-record
hitting streak at 24 games.
SOFTBALL (19-9 overall, 7-4 WIAC)

UW-Stevens Point looks for its second straight WIAC
tournament title this weekend when the Pointers take part in the nine-team
event at the OmniCenter in Onalaska.
The Pointers are the No. 2 seed for the tournament and
open play Friday at 11 a.m. against either UW-Stout or UW-Superior. UW-Eau
Claire is the top seed for the tournament.
UW-Stevens Point, which has won seven straight games, has
its final regular season games and final home games on Tuesday when it host
UW-Parkside at 3 p.m. at McCarty Field.
The Pointers had seven games rained out last week, playing
just two games at St. Norbert on Thursday and winning both by 8-5 and 6-4
scores. Amanda Sparks (Elcho, WI) and Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, WI) both
finished four-for-seven in the doubleheader.
Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) earned the win in
the first game and tied the school�s career record with her 11th save in
the second game. Katie Knoedler (Mosinee, WI) pitched three innings in
relief for pick up the victory.
TRACK AND FIELD
May 3-4 - WIAC Outdoor Championships (at La Crosse)

Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI) finished 12th among 21
runners in the 5000 meters to lead the UW-Stevens Point outdoor track and
field teams this weekend at the 93rd annual Drake Relays in Des Moines,
Iowa.
Lebak posted a time of 17:27.65 and was one of only two
NCAA Division III runners in the field.
Also, the men's distance medley relay team of Steve
Gillespie (Green Lake, WI), Matt Legel (Crystal Lake, IL), Jesse Baumann
(Verona, WI) and Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) placed 10th in 10:10.02. The
women's sprint medley relay of Lisa Anderson (Porterfield, WI), Jody
Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI), Jesalyn Maher (Wauwatosa, WI) and April
Raykowski (Stevens Point, WI) was 13th in 4:13.36.
Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) placed 19th in the men's
hammer throw at 163 feet, eight inches. Eschenbauch and teammate Luke
Hilgers (Nekoosa, WI) were the only Division III competitors among the 24
participants in the event. Hilgers was 21st at 161 feet, one inch.
The rest of the men�s squad participated at the Loras
Invitational. Andy Schliepp (Wild Rose, WI) was second in the 110 hurdles at
15.49 seconds and Jesse LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) was third in the 1,500
meters at 4:00.51. Tom Rutkowski (Greenfield, WI) tied for third in the pole
vault at 4.63 meters and provisionally qualified for the NCAA outdoor
championships.
