UW-Stevens Point finished 5-3 over eight home games last week and enters this week in a first-place tie in the WIAC with UW-Whitewater at 7-3 in the conference.

The Pointers opened the week splitting a doubleheader with St. Norbert, winning 10-5 and losing 14-9. They rallied the following day to sweep UW-Platteville 13-0 and 5-4 in 12 innings as freshman Matt Polomis (Wausaukee, WI) drove in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th.

UW-Stevens Point then split four games with UW-La Crosse, losing twice on Saturday 4-2 and 7-4, but coming back to take two games on Sunday by 9-4 and 13-5 scores.

Senior Randy Reed (Appleton, WI) hit .436 (17-for-39) for the week with three doubles, four home runs and 13 RBI�s. He also hit his school record sixth career triple.

Sophomore Ryan Jones (Eau Claire, WI) hit .444 (12-for-27) with three home runs, including two in Sunday�s nightcap against UW-La Crosse. Senior Paul Molitor (Reedsburg, WI) hit .400 (14-for-35) with a home run and six RBI�s.

Bill Verbrick (Appleton, WI) followed up his perfect game from April 6 by allowing no earned runs in seven innings of relief against UW-Platteville and holding UW-La Crosse to one hit over the first five innings of Saturday�s opener.

UW-Stevens Point finally has some home games this week as the Pointers play their next eight games at McCarty Field after opening the season with 22 straight on the road.

The Pointers finished 2-3 at the WIAC Cluster in Whitewater over the weekend, beating UW-River Falls 6-2 and UW-La Crosse 3-0, and losing to UW-Eau Claire 2-0, UW-Stout 9-8 and UW-Superior 13-1.

Junior Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, WI) pitched both victories to become the winningest pitcher in school history with a 39-15 career record. She passed Amy Prochaska (1994-96), who won 38 career games. Guckenberger also had her streak of 32 consecutive scoreless innings snapped in the first inning against UW-Eau Claire and now has a 0.49 ERA for the season.

Freshman Amy Schumacher (Milwaukee, WI) finished nine-for-16 for the weekend with four doubles and a home run.

The Pointers also split a doubleheader earlier in the week with UW-Whitewater, winning 2-0 in 10 innings and losing 3-2. Brooke Woller (Wausau, WI) doubled to drive in Stacy Karls (Lodi, WI) in the top of the 10th for the game-winning run in the 2-0 win.

TRACK AND FIELD

UW-Stevens Point won eight men's events and three women's events to capture both team titles at Saturday's North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Ill.

The Pointer men totaled 243.5 team points to outdistance second place North Central's 188 points, while the women's team had 158 points to edge UW-Oshkosh's 143.5 points.

Kyle Newman (La Crosse, WI) won the 200 meter dash in 21.97 and Ben Treptow (Viroqua, WI) won the 800 meter run in 1:53.08 for the men's team. Also, Brad Seeley (Ringle, WI) claimed the 5,000 meter run in 15:10.79 and Mark LaLonde (Park Falls, WI) won the 10,000 meter run in 30:53.70.

Winners in field events for the men included Mike Mead (Neenah, WI) in the high jump at six feet, seven inches and Cory Lesperance (Sheboygan, WI) in the long jump at 22 feet, 9.75 inches. Noah Eschenbauch (Rosholt, WI) won the hammer throw at 182 feet, one inch and Scott Dreger (Cambria, WI) took the javelin title at 178 feet, one inch.

Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI) led the women with an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time of 17:14.72 in the 5,000 meter run. Jody Butkowski (Stevens Point, WI) won the triple jump in 38 feet, 4.25 inches and Megan Lundahl (Sturgeon Bay, WI) captured the discus at 141 feet, three inches.

The Pointers compete this weekend at the Augustana Meet of Champions in Rock Island, Ill.
