UW-Stevens Point Wins Fifth WIAC Men�s All-Sports Award in Six YearsWith top three finishes in every men�s sport and four men�s conference championships, UW-Stevens Point captured its fifth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men�s all-sports award in six years during the 2001-02 school year. Overall, the Pointers won conference titles in five of the league�s 19 sports and finished just one and a half points behind UW-La Crosse for the combined all-sports award. UW-Stevens Point had 111.5 points and UW-La Crosse had 113 points. Points are awarded according to the final standings in each sport on a 9-8-7, etc. basis, 8-7-6, etc., depending on how many schools compete in each sport. UW-Stevens Point won men�s conference crowns in football, basketball, swimming and diving and baseball. The Pointers were also second in hockey and outdoor track and field, while finishing third in cross country, wrestling and indoor track and field. UW-Stevens Point had 58 points on the men�s side, while UW-La Crosse was second with 52.5 points. The Pointers won a women�s conference title in soccer and finished second in women�s basketball and swimming and diving. UW-Stevens Point was fourth in the women�s standings with 53.5 points, while UW-Oshkosh won the women�s title with 62 points. UW-Stevens Point also won the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association title in women�s hockey, but the sport is not offered in the WIAC. Overall, 17 of the Pointers� 20 sports finished in the top half of the conference standings and 13 sports qualified teams or individuals for NCAA tournament competition. UW-Stevens Point will likely be the conference�s top finisher in the final Sears Director�s Cup standings, which are released next week and measure the top athletic programs in the NCAA Division III. |
