7, 2002 Pointer Athletes Help Ministry Health Donate $1,500
to Salvation Army
UW-Stevens Point is one of three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference institutions that has been selected to receive a donation to
local food pantries as part of Ministry Health Care�s �Help Feed the
Hungry� promotion. UW-Stevens Point finished second to UW-Eau Claire in an internet voting
program during the months of February and March on the Ministry Health Care
website. Fans were asked to
vote for their favorite WIAC team in the on-line poll. With
its second place finish, the university�s Student Athlete Advisory
Committee received $1,500 that has been donated to the Salvation Army.
UW-Platteville finished third in the voting. In addition to the voting program, fans were also asked to deposit non-perishable food items in designated collection containers at all WIAC athletics events during February and March. Ministry Health Care is a
values-driven health care delivery network of aligned hospitals, clinics and
other providers, based in Wisconsin and Minnesota. St. Michael�s Hospital
in Stevens Point and St. Joseph�s Hospital in Marshfield are part of the
Ministry Health Care network. Reed Named WIAC Baseball Position Player of the Week
UW-Stevens Point senior Randy Reed has been named the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball Position Player of the Week
after his performance that helped the Pointers capture their third WIAC
title in four seasons. Reed, an Appleton native and East High School graduate, hit .462 for the week (18-for-39) as the Pointers went 7-1 for the week. He was 11-for-19 in a four-game series at UW-Whitewater as the Pointers won three of the games. Among Reed�s 18 hits, 12 were for extra bases with six doubles, two triples and four home runs for a 1.062 slugging percentage. He also had 12 runs scored and 16 RBI's with hits in all eight games as the Pointers averaged 10.5 runs per game for the week. Reed currently ranks
second in the WIAC with a .398 average. His Player of the Week selection is
the first of his career. Baseball Team Ranked 10th in Latest National Poll
With wins 14 of its last 16 games, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team is
ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Division III poll by the American Baseball
Coaches Association. The ranking is the highest of the season for the
Pointers, who were ranked 19th in the previous poll. UW-Stevens Point is 31-8 overall following Tuesday�s doubleheader sweep
at Marian. The Pointers are also the top-ranked team in the Midwest Region
rankings.
