First Game Loss, Second Game Rain Cost Baseball at UW-La Crosse

A UW-La Crosse rally in the first game of a doubleheader and a rainout in the second game on Sunday dropped the UW-Stevens Point baseball team to the fourth seed for the upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

The Pointers had a chance for the third seed with a victory, but the Eagles' Chester Janke hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to give UW-La Crosse a 5-3 victory in the opening game. UW-La Crosse led the second game 2-0 in the fourth inning before the teams waited through a two-hour rain delay. The rain stopped, but because of previous wet conditions in La Crosse, the field was deemed unplayable and the game was cancelled.

As a result, the two teams tied for third place in the WIAC with 8-5 records, but the Eagles gained the third seed because of their victory over the Pointers. UW-Stevens Point is 25-11 overall and will be the fourth seed in the tournament. The Pointers will meet top-seeded UW-Whitewater Friday at noon in Whitewater. UW-La Crosse will take on second-seeded UW-Oshkosh in the other first round game in the double-elimination tournament.

The Pointers held a 3-0 lead in the first game, but hit into three double plays in the first three innings that prevented an even bigger lead. Sam Molski hit his single-season school record tying 11th home run of the season in the second inning to give the Pointers a 2-0 lead. Molski and Jon Jagler each had three hits for UW-Stevens Point.

UW-La Crosse got its first run off Pointer starter Troy Bielmeier in the seventh on a solo homer by Janke. The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Pointers' reliever Jared Szews worked out of a bases loaded jam with one out to force extra innings.

Szews surrendered a leadoff single to Josh Abbott in the 10th and Janke followed with the game-winning homer.
