Players of the Week May 1 Baseball (Pitcher) Bill Verbrick (Appleton, WI/Xavier) - The sophomore pitched a complete game victory over UW-Oshkosh, striking out seven and allowing just six hits and two earned runs as the Pointers swept the third-ranked Titans to climb back into the WIAC title chase. Baseball (Position Player) Kevin Fry (Helenville, WI/Lakeside Lutheran) - The freshman leftfielder batted .600 for the week (9-for-15) with four doubles and four RBI's. Fry had hits in eight consecutive at-bats over one span, which included a four-for-four performance against UW-Platteville and a three-for-four effort in a win over UW-Oshkosh. He even had two doubles in one inning against UW-Platteville as the Pointers scored 13 runs in the third inning of an 18-5 win. Softball Jamie Lowney (Freedom, WI/Freedom) - The senior pitched a pair of victories at the UW-River Falls tournament, including a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over UW-Stout Saturday. She also struck out five and walked none in an eight-inning win over the Blue Devils Sunday. On Monday, Lowney became UW-Stevens Point's all-time career strikeout leader while also making her school-record 70th career start in a loss at UW-Whitewater. Men's Track Events Distance Medley Relay Team - The team placed fifth in the college division of the prestigious Drake Relays. Dan Schwamberger (North Mankato, MN/North Mankato), Ben Treptow (Viroqua, WI/Viroqua), Chris Horvat (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls), and Jesse Drake (Rhinelander, WI/Rhinelander) combined for a time of 9:56.99. Men's Field Events Joel Schult (Merrill, WI/Merrill) - The senior thrower won first place in the discus at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational. His toss of 164' 7'' was the second best throw in UW-Stevens Point history. Women's Track Events Becky Lebak (Burlington, WI/Burlington) - The freshman distance runner won the 1,500 meter run at the UW-La Crosse Classic. Lebak finished in a time of 4:43.91. Women's Field Events Katie Eiring (Somerset, WI/Somerset) - The senior pole vaulter provisionally qualified for the NCAA III National Championships at the UW-La Crosse Classic. Eiring cleared 3.21m (10' 6.25'') to finish third in the event. |
