UW-Stevens Point Names Athletes of the Year Five athletes have been honored as UW-Stevens Points Athletes of the Year for their performances during the 1999-2000 school year. Mens basketball player Brant Bailey has been named the top male athlete in a team sport, while womens basketball player Jessica Ott earned the womens team sport honor. Swimmer Randy Boelk and cross country/track runner Dan Schwamberger shared mens individual sport honors, while swimmer Mary Agazzi was the schools top female individual sport athlete. The awards are selected by the entire UW-Stevens Point coaching staff. Bailey, a Wisconsin Dells native, was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3hoops.com. The senior forward scored a school-record 723 points this past season and averaged 24.1 points per game as the Pointers finished 25-5 and claimed both the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. UW-Stevens Point advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament before falling to UW-Eau Claire 60-58 in the sectional finals. Bailey set eight school records and moved into fifth place on the schools all-time scoring list with 1,506 points, despite entering the season with 783 points in his first three years combined. Ott, a New Glarus native, ranks second on UW-Stevens Points all-time scoring list with 1,592 career points. This past season, she led the Pointers in scoring for the third straight year, scoring 383 points for an average of 15.3 points per game. The senior guard holds school records for three-pointers in a game with seven, three-pointers in a season with 78 as a sophomore, and three-pointers in a career with 223. She also tied the school record with 36 points in a win over UW-Platteville this past season. She ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III as a senior in free throw percentage at 84.9 percent (107-for-126). For her career, Ott is the schools all-time leader in free throw percentage at 82 percent (359-for-439). Boelk, an Embarrass, Minn. native, finished sixth in the overall competition at the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships while leading the Pointers to their fourth straight top 10 finish at seventh overall. The junior finished second in the 200 backstroke, third in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 400 individual medley at the national meet to earn All-American honors in all three events. He also was a member of two All-American relays, finishing fifth in the 200 medley and sixth in the 400 medley. At the WIAC championships, Boelk won six conference titles to lead the Pointers to their third team title in four seasons. He won the 200 butterfly, 200 medley and 400 medley, while also swimming on the 400 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay. Schwamberger, a North Mankato, Minn. native, was an indoor track Division III national champion in the 5000 meters, while also earning his second All-American honor in cross country. The senior finished 25th at the Division III cross country national meet and was also a member of the distance medley relay team, which finished second at the indoor track national meet. Off the track, Schwamberger boasts a 3.91 grade point average and was recognized as a second-team GTE Academic All-American in cross country as well as the WIAC mens cross country scholar athlete. Schwamberger won both the 1,500 meter and 5,000 meter WIAC titles and earned WIAC indoor track Athlete of the Year honors. Agazzi, a Kenosha native, had an incredible WIAC championships performance while leading the Pointers to their first-ever conference title. She set WIAC records in two individual events and three relays at the WIAC championships, while also qualifying for the Division III national meet in two events. The senior set conference records in both 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. She won the 50 freestyle in 23.96 and the 100 freestyle in 53.10. The times also set UW-Stevens Point school and pool records. In addition to her individual success, Agazzi was a part of three conference record setting relays. She led off the 400 freestyle relay which won in 3:34.67 and also opened the 800 freestyle relay which won in 7:51.36. Agazzi anchored the winning 400 medley relay in 3:57.38. |
