Backstrokers Vault Pointers to Sixth Place at NCAA Swim Meet

Randy Boelk and Jeremy Francioli both finished in the top five of the 100 backstroke to highlight UW-Stevens Point's performance on the second day of the three-day NCAA Division III men's swimming and diving championships in Atlanta.

Boelk finished third in 50.37 and Francioli was fifth in 50.99 to both earn All-American honors and help the Pointers move up to sixth in the team standings with 111 points. Kenyon (Ohio) has 436.5 points and is on its way to its 21st straight team title.

Boelk and Francioli earned another All-American honor in the 200 medley relay, teaming with Brent Newport and Nick Hansen to finish fifth with a time of 1:33.06

Francioli, Newport, Hansen and Anthony Harris combined to finish 15th in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:13.16. The meet concludes Saturday.

Late Homers Lead Baseball Team to Sweep of Denison

Randy Reed and Jon Jagler hit sixth inning home runs in separate games to lead the UW-Stevens Point baseball team to 15-1 and 7-4 victories over Denison (Ohio) Friday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Reed's sixth inning grand slam helped the Pointers to an opening-game victory and Jagler hit a two-run homer in the second game.

The Pointers led the first game 6-1 entering the sixth inning before Reed's homer highlighted a six-run inning for UW-Stevens Point. Reed finished three-for-five with six RBI's, while Matt Peetz was four-for-four.

Ryan Ivy gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the second inning and Eric Schlender earned his first collegiate win by pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits.

Jagler was three-for-five and Mike McCann was three-for-six for the Pointers. Pat McCann and Rob Govek both went two-for-four.

In the second game, the Pointers led 5-4 entering the sixth inning before Jagler's blast gave UW-Stevens Point a 7-4 lead.

Jared Szews picked up his first career win by closing the game with 3 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing one hit. Sam Molski went two-for-four.

UW-Stevens Point is now 6-3 and closes its trip with a doubleheader Saturday.
