Schwamberger, Byrne Named GTE Academic All-Americans University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point seniors Dan Schwamberger and Tammy Byrne have both been named GTE Academic All-Americans in spring at-large sports, giving the Pointers six Academic All-Americans for the 1999-2000 school year. Schwamberger, an NCAA Division III champion in indoor track, was a mens first-team selection, while Byrne, the Most Valuable Player of the Pointers tennis team, was a womens second-team performer. No other Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school had an athlete represented on the 15-member mens and womens first, second or third teams. Womens track athlete Kim Deaton of Carthage was the only other athlete from a Wisconsin college honored on the spring at-large teams. Schwamberger was also a second-team honoree in mens cross country and was joined by other UW-Stevens Point selections Brent Newport, a mens first-team selection in mens swimming, Andy Palzkill, a second-team performer in football, and Becca Uphoff, a third-team selection in womens swimming. UW-Stevens Points six Academic All-Americans were easily the most of any WIAC school this past year. UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater each had two athletes honored as the WIAC had a total of 12 Academic All-Americans. "This was an outstanding year for our institution both on and off the field," UW-Stevens Point Athletics Director Frank OBrien said. "Were very proud of the job our athletes have done in the classroom and awards such as these reward the hard work our athletes put in away from the field." The spring at-large teams include athletes from all spring championship sports besides baseball and softball from all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA colleges. Schwamberger won the NCAA Division III indoor national championship in the 5000 meters and finished third in the 5000 at the outdoor national championships. He also was a member of the Pointers second-place distance medley relay team at the indoor nationals. The North Mankato, Minn. native has a 3.91 grade point average in Forest Management. He won WIAC indoor titles in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters while earning Most Valuable Runner honors at the meet. He also won the 5,000 meters and took second in the 1,500 at the WIAC outdoor championships. Schwamberger, who is a two-time All-American in cross country, was UW-Stevens Points individual sport male "Athlete of the Year" for the past season. Byrne, an Oregon, Wis. native, majored in German and has a 3.98 grade point average. Byrne was the WIAC No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles champion in 1996 and is a two-time team Most Valuable Player. This past season, she posted a 12-3 singles record and 8-7 doubles mark, primarily at
the No. 2 positions to earn team MVP accolades. Byrne has earned the College of Letters
and Science Outstanding Student Achievement Award in Foreign Language and Most Outstanding
German Student Scholarship. She was also awarded the Margaret Schmauss Scholarship, which
gave her a full stipend to study in Mageburg, Germany for one year. |
