UW-Stevens Point Announces 2005 Schedule

2005 Pointer Football Schedule

Nobody will accuse the UW-Stevens Point football team of dodging any top-notch opponents in the upcoming 2005 season as the Pointers will play four ranked teams among their first five contests, including non-conference games against two national powers that went undefeated in last years regular season.

The Pointers open the season with a home game against Hardin-Simmons (Texas) on Sept. 3 and then play at defending national champion Linfield (Ore.) on Sept. 17. Hardin-Simmons went 10-0 last year before losing to eventual national runner-up Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) in the second round of the playoffs, while Linfield went 13-0 and captured the national title last year.

Hardin-Simmons ended the year No. 4 in the final national rankings and will also host the Pointers in Abilene, Texas in 2006. Linfield returns national Player of the Year Brett Elliott at quarterback and was given one of its toughest tests of the season last year at UW-Stevens Point, rallying from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit for a 46-35 victory. This years game will be the Wildcats home opener in McMinnville, Ore.

The Pointers will host Waldorf (Iowa) in the annual Spud Bowl on Sept. 24 before opening conference play with the top two teams in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from last season. The Pointers play UW-La Crosse in their WIAC opener for the third straight year on Oct. 1 at La Crosse and then host UW-Whitewater for homecoming on Oct. 8. UW-La Crosse was ranked 13th in last years final poll and UW-Whitewater finished 25th.

The schedule concludes with five WIAC games, including home games on Oct. 15 against UW-River Falls, Oct. 29 against UW-Eau Claire and Nov. 12 against UW-Stout.
